Lumbar Puncture

If doctors suspect a serious infection, they may wish to take a small sample of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). This is the fluid which surrounds the spinal cord and brain, and analysing it can tell us if infection is present.

The test is carried out under sterile conditions and involves a small needle being inserted between two bones in the baby's back.
